Behind the Scenes at Stone Tower Winery with Lacey Huber

Posted by Ernie K. on 9/28/20 4:17 PM

In this episode, meet Lacey Huber of Stone Tower Winery.  She talks about the winery’s  beautiful vistas, delicious wine and food, and live music—all of which offer a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the DMV.

Takeaways from the conversation:

  • Stone Tower Winery isa family owned business since 1975.   Originally a cattle farm called Windswept, it spans over 300 acres.

  • The pandemic has been challenging, as it has for many local businesses. Today Stone Tower succeeds by operating in ways that keep everyone safe while still presenting an outstanding guest experience. The goal is to host guests with safety, great Virginia wine, and numerous activities.

  • Curbside pickup and internet sales have been extremely popular during the pandemic.

  • Stone Tower is a working farm! There are 85 acres of vineyards. In fact, 12,000 cases of wine will be produced this year which equates to 200 tons of fruit and 12-14 different wines produced from Stone Tower grapes.

  • How good is Virginia wine compared to wine growing in other regions of the world? Virginia farmers have figured out how to grow quality grapes and are dedicated to creating quality wine. Virginia wines are now placing high in international competitions.

  • Water is the main challenge to growing grapes in Virginia. While super windy at Stone Tower, this helps keep grapes healthy. The windy hilltop helps negate Virginia's high humidity. Because August is harvest time, dodging hurricane season is key to the late summer grape harvest.

  • Believe it or not, the wine glass DOES really matter! A general rule of thumb, if you are drinking a $60 wine out of a $60 glass you get a $120 dollar experience. If you drink a $20 bottle of wine out of a $60 glass, you get a $60 experience!

  • But the company you share and pleasant surroundings tend to make the most impact on whether or not you enjoy your glass (or bottle!) of wine.

  • Recommendation:  plan your visit and make an online reservation to Stone Tower prior to arriving for wine tasting, activities, etc.
